API vs browser automation for AI agents

An API gives software a structured interface to another system. Browser automation operates the visible application, often through its page controls.

An API gives software a structured interface to another system. Browser automation operates the visible application, often through its page controls. Prefer the supported interface that completes the task reliably with appropriate permissions. Browser automation can fill gaps, but it needs checks for changing layouts and ambiguous UI state.

Compare one real task

Imagine downloading an approved monthly report. An API may return a report ID and explicit status. A browser may require selecting an account, choosing dates and waiting for an export. Either can work, but the evidence and failure modes differ.

Do not assume that a button click proves success. The export may still be processing, or the active account may be wrong.

Evaluate the interface

  • Coverage: does it support the exact action and fields required?
  • Identity: can the system verify the current account and target record?
  • Stability: what changes when the product updates?
  • Evidence: can the result be confirmed independently?
  • Recovery: can interrupted work resume without duplicate effects?

Document authentication requirements and use approved access methods. Do not bypass security challenges or treat a login wall as an empty data set.

Make UI state observable

For a browser workflow, inspect the page before acting and verify the result afterward. Handle disabled buttons, dialogs and loading states explicitly. A script that assumes a fixed sequence can silently operate on the wrong record after a layout change.

For an API workflow, validate the returned schema and business status. HTTP success alone may not mean the requested business operation completed.

Keep a fallback honest

A fallback should preserve the same permissions and outcome checks as the primary route. It should not use a broader account or a different destination merely to avoid an error. If neither route can complete the task, return the prepared artifact and the precise missing step so a person can continue safely.
