AI memory vs chat history: what should your agent remember?
Chat history is a record of conversation. AI memory is selected information preserved for later use.

Chat history is a record of conversation. AI memory is selected information preserved for later use. Treating the entire conversation as memory can carry outdated decisions, sensitive details and guesses into future tasks. Useful business memory needs purpose, provenance and a way to correct or remove it.
Decide what deserves persistence
Imagine a customer changing their preferred meeting day. The conversation includes a tentative suggestion, a later correction and a final agreement. Saving all three as equal facts creates ambiguity. A durable record should identify the confirmed preference, its source and the date it became effective.
Temporary requests should usually remain task state. A one-time instruction to prepare a short reply does not necessarily mean all future replies must be short.
Classify before saving
- Stable preference: useful across tasks, with a clear owner.
- Current commitment: a decision that remains active until fulfilled or changed.
- Task state: progress needed to resume one piece of work.
- Source reference: a pointer to a document that should be read when needed.
- Sensitive detail: information requiring a specific purpose and access boundary.
Do not infer personal traits from silence, writing style or a single message. Store explicit business facts instead of speculative profiles.
Design correction as a normal operation
A user should be able to inspect a saved fact, identify its source and replace an outdated version. Downstream copies matter: correcting one record is insufficient if an old summary keeps reintroducing the same claim.
Test this with a synthetic preference. Save it, change it and ask a new task that relies on it. Check the answer and the retrieved memory to ensure the current version wins.
Keep retention proportional
Ask why a fact needs to survive and who may use it. Some task state can expire after completion; a policy reference may remain while the policy is active. Persistent memory is an operational asset only when the team can explain what it contains and how it stays accurate.
